Often ADSL providers offer 'cheap' deals on ADSL equipment but before being seduced by what's on offer, it is worth considering whether it is suitable for your needs. We always recommend having an ADSL Modem Router with at least 1 and preferably 4 ethernet ports and an integral firewall.

Wireless or wired?

Connecting your computer to the internet via ADSL immediately increases the risk from crackers and other forms of intrusion. By using an ADSL Modem/Router with it's own firewall, you reduce the risk; obviously it needs to be configured correctly. If you are using wires (ethernet cable) to connect to the router, the risk doesn't change. As soon as you introduce wireless access to your router and network, the risks increase. Consequently, only go wireless, if you really have no alternative. If you do go wireless, it is even more important to have a good quality Wireless ADSL Modem/Router and follow the manufacturer's instructions on securing your wireless network.

What to buy?

We use both for ourselves and our clients, Vigor2600 ADSL modem/routers for the following reasons:

  • In the three years we've been using them, we've suffered only one equipment failure and it was repaired and returned within 48 hours
  • There is a straightforward web interface to configure the settings
  • Good support documentation is available at: http://www.draytek.co.uk/support/router_faq.html

Other ADSL Modem/Routers

There are a number of similar ADSL Modem/Routers available from other reputable manufacturers which may be better, cheaper or at least as good. A good source of information is: http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/
