So you've just taken delivery of a spanking new PC and can't wait to use it. However, it is worth taking a few steps to setup your system to protect it from viruses and other forms of 'malware' which can inflict damage on your system and cause frustration and disillusionment. Following the steps described in this and the SECURITY section should reduce those risks and lead to greater enjoyment of your new kit. Many of the steps are applicable to any PC (not just a shiny new one!) and the issues covered in SECURITY apply to both. We have attempted to ensure that we cover Windows, Mac OSX and Linux operating systems but each has their own particular way of doing things; where possible we refer you to specific resources. Whatever system you run, you need to make sure you keep your operating system up to date
* Remember to configure anti-virus software before setting up your email or web-browser! Elsewhere in the site, you will see that Debian GNU/Linux is our preferred system but irrespective of which operating system you use you can benefit from free software to enhance your computing experience. Have Fun! |
